Wooing Tree Commercial, Cromwell Otago

We are currently working on the hospitality and retail precinct within the Wooing Tree Estate Development, Cromwell, Central Otago in New Zealand’s South Island.

This Wooing Tree Commercial Building is the second site we have master planned within the precinct. Splitting the available 600 sqm gross floor area over two buildings, to better match the ‘grain’ of local building typology, it will cater for up to 6 tenancies ranging from 70 sqm to 250 sqm, with onsite facilities including a 30-bay car park.

The buildings’ typology is highly curated for the local vernacular.   Strong, parapeted gabled forms are dominant, and as with the footprint, the mass has once again been broken up across the façade.  This allows for a generous pitch to be used for the gable without the overall height becoming too great.  It also allows for the use of a second, lean-to roof form to completes the width, perhaps as a manifestation of evolution, expressing extensions overtime.

The material palette has also been developed to match the specific local aesthetics of Central Otago.  Timber shuttered concrete, brick and standing seam roofs and walls:  Emphasizing strength, performance and intimation of a rural agricultural architectural origin or reuse.
