The Lake Counter, Queenstown

The Lake Counter client brief was for a hybrid café grocery and delicatessen offer, that was to act as a heart to the multi-million-dollar Kawarau Village development in Queenstown.

The development itself comprises a range of accommodation types, from serviced apartments three star through to five-star accommodation including The Hilton Hotel chain.  Several tenancy locations were considered in the Commercial Retail zone within the development and feasibility master plans provide for each. Ultimately a ‘crossroads’ locale with a great view was determined as best for the café situated at the top of the Wakatipu Steps. A major challenge was to provide a viable grocery offer including enough product lines and types within a restricted footprint whilst maintaining a minimal modern aesthetic to reflect the design aspirations for the overall Kawarau Village as a whole.  Tight timeframes and the environmental conditions of a Queenstown winter were also project issues that needed to be accounted for.
