BACI, Newmarket Auckland

BACI ; (Books-Art-Coffee-Incorporated) was a vision brought to F+D=A by surgeon, general practitioner, and author Sharad Paul, for the total integration of a bookstore and licensed café, with allowance made for the exhibition of 2-D and 3-D art pieces.

This combination of uses is virtually unheard of in New Zealand, and in fact only rarely seen overseas.  The flagship was to be located into The Rialto Centre, Broadway Newmarket.  The brief was to create a inviting and unique environment, with a traditional book shop feel, creating comfortable corners where customers would feel comfortable to stay, read, eat and drink.  Architecture F+D=A utilized an organic curvilinear aesthetic in all aspects of the fit out, punctuating the unique environment in extraordinary items such as the custom acrylic light fittings, and flowing joinery items such as the Books Point of Sale.  Store security was also an important aspect of the fit out, with visual observation of all areas of the store from the POS.  Space was a premium with a inclusion of the two uses into the 200 sqm. area and all efforts had to be made to economize on space where ever possible.
